Vega Sicilia Unico 1998 is a legendary red wine from the esteemed Ribera del Duero DO in Castille and León, Spain. This exceptional cuvée blends predominantly Tinto Fino (the local name for Tempranillo) with a proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon, carefully selected from some of the estate’s oldest vines. The 1998 vintage was marked by a relatively classic growing season, lending balance and poise to the final wine. Rigorous sorting of fruit and an extended ageing process – often spanning over a decade in both French and American oak barrels and bottle – impart remarkable complexity, depth, and longevity. In the glass, Unico 1998 offers a bouquet of ripe blackcurrants, dark cherries, tobacco, leather, liquorice, spices, and a subtle earthy minerality. The palate is both silky and structured, with refined tannins, electric freshness, and a long, harmonious finish.
Ribera del Duero is one of Spain’s most prestigious wine regions, located on the high northern plateau of Castille and León. The region benefits from an extreme continental climate, with hot days and cool nights, which helps retain acidity and develop complex aromas. The soils, a mix of limestone, clay, and gravel, offer excellent drainage while encouraging deep root growth, favouring quality over quantity. Vega Sicilia’s history is entwined with the rise of Ribera del Duero as a global fine wine region; the estate has set the benchmark for Spanish reds since its founding in 1864.
Vega Sicilia Unico 1998 shines alongside refined dishes where its depth can be fully appreciated. Traditional Castilian roasted lamb or suckling pig are superb local pairings, as are rich stews such as rabo de toro (oxtail) or braised beef cheeks. The wine’s complexity also harmonises beautifully with aged Manchego or hard sheep’s milk cheeses and earthy mushroom-based dishes. For a more international match, try roast venison or wild boar.
To fully appreciate its aromatic palette, decant the wine for at least two hours before serving. Serve at 17-18°C in large glasses to allow the bouquet to unfold. This vintage is at a beautiful stage of maturity, but can be held a few more years for those who enjoy the nuances of further bottle age.
