Tempranillo is a classic Spanish grape variety renowned for its versatility and depth. On the nose, it typically exhibits a complex bouquet combining red and black fruit aromas such as cherry, plum and blackberry, with hints of tomato leaf, leather and vanilla derived from oak ageing. The palate is medium to full-bodied, offering balanced acidity and moderate tannins, often complemented by earthy and spicy undertones, tobacco, and a subtle savoury edge.
The primary regions cultivating Tempranillo include Spain’s Rioja and Ribera del Duero, as well as Toro, Navarra and La Mancha. The grape is also increasingly grown in Portugal (where it is known as Tinta Roriz or Aragonez), and in select regions of Australia and the United States.
Tempranillo forms the backbone of both youthful, fruit-driven reds and robust, ageworthy wines such as Rioja Reserva and Gran Reserva. It is also used in blends and rosés, offering both elegance and structure.
Recommended food pairings include roast lamb, grilled beef, Iberian ham, chorizo, hard cheeses like Manchego, and earthy mushroom-based dishes. Its natural acidity and integrated tannins make Tempranillo an excellent companion for a wide variety of Mediterranean and hearty, rustic fare.
