The 2012 Sassicaia from Tenuta San Guido is an iconic wine from the Bolgheri DOC in Tuscany, and it embodies the prestige of the Super Tuscan movement. This vintage is a refined blend, predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon with a smaller proportion of Cabernet Franc, typical to the estate’s tradition. The grapes are harvested from the estate’s unique vineyards located on the coastal hills, benefiting from maritime influences and gravelly, well-drained soils. Vinification follows meticulous selection, gentle pressing, and fermentation in stainless steel, followed by a maturation in French oak barriques for about 24 months, which imparts remarkable structure and elegance. In the glass, the 2012 reveals a brilliant ruby hue, with a nose full of blackcurrant, wild berries, cedar, subtle tobacco, and mineral undertones. The palate is both powerful and graceful, boasting fine tannins, balanced acidity, and a long, persistent finish.
The Bolgheri region, situated along the Tyrrhenian coast, benefits from a mild Mediterranean climate with abundant sunshine and cooling sea breezes. This environment, along with the unique soils of sand, clay, and gravel, allows the Bordeaux varieties to thrive, giving Bolgheri wines their distinctive character: ripe fruit intensity, lifted aromatics, and freshness. Historically, Bolgheri achieved fame in the late 20th century with its Super Tuscan revolution, challenging the traditional Tuscan templates and making Cabernet-based blends among Italy’s most celebrated wines.
A wine of this calibre deserves thoughtful food pairings. It shines alongside classic Tuscan dishes such as bistecca alla fiorentina (Florentine steak), roasted lamb with rosemary, or wild boar ragù. Its depth and structure also pair beautifully with mature cheeses like pecorino toscano. For a modern touch, try it with grilled veal or duck breast with a berry reduction.
For optimal enjoyment, open and decant the bottle at least one hour before serving. Serve at a temperature of 16-18°C to allow the delicate bouquet and nuanced palate to fully express themselves. This wine will continue to evolve beautifully in the cellar, but it is already drinking magnificently at this maturity.
