Tenuta San Guido's Sassicaia 2016 is an extraordinary red blend from the Bolgheri DOC in Tuscany, often considered one of Italy’s most legendary wines. The wine is predominantly composed of Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by a smaller proportion of Cabernet Franc. The grapes are sourced from vineyards with stony, well-drained soils rich in marl and limestone, which impart distinct minerality and structure. After a rigorous selection process, the must undergoes temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel, followed by ageing in French oak barriques for around 24 months. The 2016 vintage expresses remarkable balance, elegance, and depth—a true reflection of both the meticulous winemaking and the unique terroir.
Bolgheri itself, on the Tuscan coast, enjoys a maritime climate with moderating sea breezes that temper the heat of the summer, encouraging slow, even grape ripening and a beautiful balance of acidity and ripeness. The soils are diverse, with gravelly patches that echo those of Bordeaux, which originally inspired the blend. Bolgheri was relatively unknown until the late 20th century when Sassicaia established the region as a world-class producer of “Super Tuscan” wines, seamlessly blending Tuscan tradition and French varietals.
For food pairing, the intricate structure, refined tannins, and layered blackcurrant, cedar, and herbal notes make Sassicaia 2016 an ideal partner for classic Tuscan dishes such as bistecca alla fiorentina or wild boar ragù. It also pairs beautifully with roast lamb, aged Parmigiano-Reggiano, or venison, as well as more cosmopolitan fare such as grilled ribeye, herbed roast beef, or mushroom risotto.
To fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and textural finesse, serve Sassicaia 2016 at 16-18°C. Decant for at least one to two hours before serving to allow the bouquet to unfold. While already remarkable, the wine has excellent ageing potential and will reward cellaring for a decade or more.
