Tenuta San Guido’s Sassicaia 2000 is one of the true icons of Italian winemaking, hailing from the esteemed Bolgheri DOC in Tuscany. This vintage is a blend predominantly composed of Cabernet Sauvignon, with a complement of Cabernet Franc, showing the estate’s consistent embrace of Bordeaux varietals in the context of the Tuscan terroir. The 2000 vintage reflects a warm growing season, yielding a generous and expressive wine with ripe tannins and excellent structure. Careful vinification and maturation in French oak barrels—typically for around two years—bring about harmonious integration of fruit, spice, and oak-driven complexity. The wine reveals deep, dark fruits, cassis, graphite and cedar, underpinned by tobacco leaf and Mediterranean herbs, with a refined, persistent finish that strongly characterises Sassicaia.
Bolgheri itself is located on the Tuscan coast, an area that has quickly gained prominence thanks to pioneering estates such as Tenuta San Guido. The region benefits from a unique microclimate, with cooling breezes from the Tyrrhenian Sea and ample sunshine, which allow for optimum ripening. The soils here are a complex mix of clay, sand, and gravel—ideal for Cabernet grapes—a characteristic that was quickly noticed by the founding family in the mid-20th century, giving rise to the now famous “Super Tuscan” movement. The resulting wines are known for their balance, depth, and capacity to age gracefully, blending Italian charm with a Bordeaux sensibility.
Sassicaia 2000’s powerful, yet graceful character lends itself to a variety of classic pairings. Traditional Tuscan dishes like bistecca alla fiorentina, wild boar ragù, or roasted lamb emphasise the wine’s structure and depth. The refined tannins also marry well with matured cheeses or rich game dishes, making it a remarkable companion at the table.
To fully appreciate this wine’s complexity and evolution, serve it at a temperature of 17-18°C. Decanting for one to two hours before tasting will allow its bouquet and palate to unfold beautifully.
