Tenuta San Guido’s Sassicaia 2011 is one of the great icons of Bolgheri and indeed modern Italian oenology. This Bolgheri red, bearing the famed Sassicaia name, exemplifies the Super Tuscan spirit. While the exact blend for this vintage is usually carefully guarded, Sassicaia tends to be composed predominantly of Bordeaux varieties. Cabernet Sauvignon is traditionally at the heart of the cuvée, likely supported by a smaller proportion of Cabernet Franc. The wine, crafted with meticulous attention, is aged in French oak barriques, which lends further complexity and a refined structure, whilst celebrating the unique character of the Tuscan coast.
Bolgheri, situated along the Maremma coastline in western Tuscany, benefits from a mild Mediterranean climate. The region enjoys abundant sunshine, refreshing maritime breezes and a variance in day-night temperatures, helping the grapes to achieve optimal ripeness while retaining freshness. The gravelly soils, reminiscent of Bordeaux’s Left Bank, suit the international grape varieties so well that Sassicaia famously paved the way for the entire Super Tuscan movement. This terroir imparts an elegant minerality and a subtle saline edge to its wines. The history of Bolgheri is relatively recent by Italian standards, Sassicaia itself only emerging in the late 1960s, but it has since established a benchmark for Italian fine wine.
Such a stately and complex red, now entering a beautiful phase of maturity, pairs superbly with robust, savoury dishes. Classic Tuscan fare comes to mind: grilled Chianina beef, wild boar ragù over pappardelle, or a rich bistecca alla Fiorentina. Roast game, aged cheeses and dishes featuring porcini mushrooms will also complement the wine’s depth and evolved nuances.
For ideal enjoyment, decant Sassicaia 2011 for at least one hour before serving—it will allow the bouquet to unveil layers of cedar, dark fruit, tobacco and subtle earthy notes. Serve at 16-18°C to best appreciate its harmony and lingering finish. This vintage promises a memorable tasting experience, best savoured slowly among good company.
