Viniou Reviews

Bodegas Roda Reserva 2017 is an outstanding red wine hailing from Spain’s emblematic Rioja DO region. Produced by the renowned Bodegas Roda estate, this wine is crafted as a cuvée reserva, predominantly from Tempranillo, often complemented by Graciano and Garnacha—classic grapes of Rioja. The 2017 vintage in Rioja was shaped by a challenging growing season with spring frosts leading to lower yields, but the resulting grapes were concentrated and expressive. The maturation includes significant time in oak barrels, as required for a Reserva, imparting structure and depth. Expect a complex bouquet of dark cherries, blackberries, subtle plums, and hints of liquorice, gently woven with notes of tobacco, cocoa, and fine spice from the deft oak ageing. The palate is elegantly structured with refined tannins and a remarkable balance between fruit, oak, and acidity.

Rioja is one of Spain’s most storied wine regions, located in the north, protected by the Sierra Cantabria mountains to the north and bordered by the Ebro River to the south. The climate is a favourable blend of Atlantic, Mediterranean, and continental influences, allowing for nuanced ripening and longevity in the wines. The soils in Rioja are varied, but often composed of calcareous clay, alluvial, and iron-rich clay, which nurture vines capable of producing wines of both power and finesse. Rioja’s history is steeped in tradition, with a reputation for crafting ageworthy reds revered worldwide.

Thanks to its versatile profile and polished tannins, Bodegas Roda Reserva 2017 pairs wonderfully with a host of dishes. For a regional Spanish match, consider roast lamb or chuletillas al sarmiento (lamb chops grilled over vine cuttings). The wine also excels alongside mature Manchego cheese, hearty beef stews, or wild mushroom risotto. It’s equally at home with more international dishes such as duck breast with cherry sauce or grilled vegetables with herbes de Provence.

For optimal enjoyment, decant the wine for about an hour before serving to allow its complex aromas to fully express themselves. Serve at 16-18°C to best appreciate its bouquet, texture and subtle oak nuances. This is a bottle with the capability to evolve gracefully over the next decade if you choose to cellar it further.
