Viniou Reviews

Barolo Falletto 1997 by Bruno Giacosa is an outstanding example of classic Piedmontese Nebbiolo. This cuvée hails from the esteemed Falletto vineyard, a monopole of Giacosa, known for its prime southwest-facing slopes and calcareous marl soils. The 1997 vintage is renowned for its warm, abundant sunshine, delivering wines with richness, maturity, and velvety tannins. Giacosa’s meticulous approach to vinification includes extended maceration and ageing in large Slovenian oak casks, allowing for a delicate integration of flavours while fully expressing Nebbiolo’s remarkable finesse and complexity.

Located in northwestern Italy, the Barolo region enjoys a continental climate with significant diurnal temperature variation, ideal for slow, balanced ripening. The unique soils—a blend of clay, limestone, and sand—impart aromatic intensity and structural elegance to the wines. Barolo has been celebrated since the 19th century as the “King of Wines and Wine of Kings”, its reputation built on powerful, age-worthy reds that combine fragrance, depth, and persistence. Bruno Giacosa, often regarded as a maestro of Nebbiolo, brings out the subtlety and grace of these exceptional terroirs while maintaining a sense of authenticity and purity.

A mature Barolo such as the 1997 Falletto pairs exquisitely with rich, earthy dishes. Traditional Piedmontese fare like braised beef cheek, veal shank with truffle jus, or tajarin pasta with wild mushroom ragù perfectly complement the wine’s aromatic complexity and savoury undertones. Mature hard cheeses such as Castelmagno or aged Parmigiano Reggiano highlight its depth and length. For an international pairing, duck breast with cherry reduction or lamb shank slow-cooked with rosemary would also work very well.

For the best experience, decant the wine for at least one hour to allow full aeration and expression of tertiary aromas. Serve at a temperature of 17-18°C—cool enough to emphasise freshness, but warm enough for the nuanced bouquet to unfold. This wine is best enjoyed in large, tulip-shaped glasses to showcase its complexity and delicate structure.
