Famille Perrin’s Cuvée Réserve 2016 Côtes-du-Rhône is a classic southern Rhône red, blending mainly Grenache with Syrah, Mourvèdre and possibly a touch of Carignan and Cinsault, following the traditions of the appellation. The 2016 vintage is particularly well-regarded for its balance and precision, benefitting from an excellent growing season with moderate temperatures and well-timed rain, resulting in grapes of very good ripeness and freshness. The wine is carefully vinified in temperature-controlled vats and aged in a mix of stainless steel and large oak casks, preserving the vibrancy of the fruit and the subtlety of the blend. Ruby in colour, this Côtes-du-Rhône expresses bright aromas of ripe raspberry, black cherry and plum, lifted by notes of herbs de Provence, pepper and a touch of liquorice. On the palate, it is medium-bodied with a lovely, supple texture, velvety tannins, and a lingering spicy finish.
The Côtes-du-Rhône appellation spans across a vast stretch of the southern Rhône Valley, where the Mediterranean climate prevails with hot, dry summers and mild winters. Soils range from alluvial terraces of pebbles and sand to clay-limestone, lending a characteristic warmth and roundness to the wines. The Rhône Valley is a historic winegrowing region, with viticulture tracing back to Roman times. The area’s tradition of blending several grape varieties contributes to the unique complexity and approachability of its wines.
This wine’s generous fruit and savoury, spicy character make it a versatile companion at the table. It pairs beautifully with Provençal cuisine: think ratatouille, grilled lamb with rosemary, or a hearty beef daube. Charcuterie, hard cheeses and roasted poultry are also excellent choices, as are Mediterranean-inspired tomato-based dishes and herb-laden stews.
For optimal enjoyment, serve this Côtes-du-Rhône at 16-18°C. Decanting for about 30 minutes will help open up its aromatic bouquet. The 2016 vintage can be enjoyed now for its freshness, or cellared for another couple of years to gain more subtle earthy notes.
