Mourvèdre is a red grape variety renowned for producing deeply coloured, full-bodied wines with robust tannins and notable ageing potential. On the nose, Mourvèdre typically reveals complex aromas of blackberries, plums, and black cherries, complemented by savoury undertones of earthy spices, herbs such as thyme and rosemary, and hints of leather and game. On the palate, it offers intense fruit concentration balanced by vibrant acidity, with flavours echoing its aromatic profile and displaying additional notes of black pepper, liquorice, and sometimes floral hints like violets.
This grape thrives in warm, dry climates, making it especially prevalent in regions such as Provence and the southern Rhône Valley in France, where it forms a key component of Bandol and Châteauneuf-du-Pape blends. Mourvèdre is also widely cultivated in Spain (where it is known as Monastrell), as well as in parts of Australia and California.
Wines made from Mourvèdre are typically rich and structured, ranging from single-varietal reds and blends to robust rosés. They pair particularly well with grilled or roasted meats, game dishes, and hearty stews, while their earthy character complements Provençal cuisine and mature cheeses.
