Carignan is a red grape variety widely recognised for its deep colour, robust structure, and vibrant acidity. It exudes a complex aromatic profile, displaying notes of dark fruits such as blackberry and black cherry, complemented by hints of liquorice, violets, pepper, and earthy undertones. On the palate, Carignan typically shows medium to full body, lively tannins, and a refreshing, occasionally rustic character, with flavours echoing its aromatic bouquet.
Originating in Spain as Cariñena and extensively cultivated in southern France, particularly in Languedoc-Roussillon, Carignan is also present in Sardinia (as Carignano) and in lesser quantities in the New World, notably in California and Chile. The grape thrives in warm, dry climates, often on old, low-yielding vines that produce concentrated and expressive wines.
Carignan is crafted in a range of styles, from vibrant, juicy youthfully-drunk reds to complex old-vine bottlings, as well as blends—especially with Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre—where it brings acidity and structure. Recommended food pairings include grilled meats, charcuterie, hearty stews, and rustic Mediterranean dishes such as ratatouille or lamb with herbs, as the grape’s fresh acidity and earthy nuances harmonise exceptionally well with robust, savoury flavours.
