Viniou Reviews

E. Guigal’s Côtes-du-Rhône Blanc 2024 is a classic representative of its appellation, produced by one of the Rhône Valley’s most respected names. This white wine is typically crafted from a blend of grape varieties such as Viognier, Roussanne, Marsanne, Clairette, Bourboulenc, and Grenache Blanc. The Viognier often dominates here, imparting an aromatic lift and expressive fruit character, while the supporting grapes contribute texture and freshness. The 2024 vintage, shaped by a mild winter and a warm, dry summer, has likely resulted in ripe yet balanced fruit, with vinification in temperature-controlled stainless steel to preserve freshness and a judicious lees ageing to enhance mouthfeel and aromatic complexity.

The Côtes-du-Rhône AOC covers an extensive area stretching from Vienne in the north to Avignon in the south. This diversity of terroirs means white Côtes-du-Rhône wines are relatively rare, making up less than 10% of the region’s production. The soils vary from galets roulés (rounded pebbles) and sandy-clay to limestone, providing good drainage and producing wines with both richness and acidity. The Rhône Valley’s Mediterranean climate, with hot, sun-drenched summers and the cooling influence of the mistral wind, allows the white varieties to reach optimal ripeness while retaining vibrancy. The region boasts a long winemaking history dating back to Roman times, and today it balances tradition with innovation, especially through producers like Guigal.

This wine’s expressive bouquet of stone fruits, white flowers, and citrus, with hints of melon and a subtle mineral edge, makes it a versatile choice at the table. It pairs delightfully with Provençal classics such as fish with tapenade, grilled sea bass, or a Niçoise salad. Soft goat’s cheeses, fresh shellfish, and even mildly spiced Asian cuisine will complement its fruit-forward style and lively acidity.

For serving, aim for a temperature between 10-12°C to accentuate its aromatic freshness while allowing the palate’s texture to shine. Decanting is not necessary, but opening the bottle a short time before serving can help the aromatics unfurl. This wine is delightful now but can age gracefully for a couple of years if you wish to explore its evolution.
