Roussanne is a distinguished white grape variety renowned for its elegance and complexity. Displaying a captivating aromatic profile, Roussanne reveals notes of ripe pear, quince, acacia blossom and herbal nuances, often intertwined with hints of honey, roasted nuts and a subtle, spiced undertone. On the palate, it typically presents a medium to full body, marked by crisp yet rounded acidity and a mineral-driven finish, contributing to considerable age-worthiness.
Primarily cultivated in the northern Rhône Valley—particularly in appellations such as Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage and Saint-Joseph—it is also grown with success in the southern Rhône and select new world regions, including California and Australia. Roussanne is often blended with Marsanne but also shines as a varietal wine, offering both still and, less commonly, sparkling styles.
Typical wine expressions range from youthful, vibrant wines with fresh fruit intensity to richer, barrel-matured versions exhibiting creamy textures and complex development. Roussanne pairs superbly with an array of refined dishes, including grilled seafood, roast poultry, veal, and lightly spiced Asian cuisine. It also complements creamy cheeses and dishes featuring mushrooms or roasted root vegetables, enhancing their subtle flavours.
