Bodegas Murua’s Cuvée Murua Blanco 2022 is a fine example of the modern white Rioja style. This wine is crafted predominantly from Viura, the backbone of great Rioja whites, often complemented by Malvasía and perhaps some Garnacha Blanca. The 2022 vintage benefited from a relatively cool and balanced growing season, which allowed the grapes to retain freshness and aromatic clarity. The winemaking at Murua typically combines stainless steel fermentation to preserve vibrancy, with a touch of oak ageing for depth and a creamy texture. The result is a wine layered with fresh citrus, white peach, hints of blanched almond, and subtle floral notes, touched by elegant, well-integrated oak and a refreshing acidity.
La Rioja is Spain’s oldest and most prestigious wine region, stretching along the Ebro River in the north of the country. The region’s diverse soils, including calcareous clay, limestone, and alluvial deposits, contribute complexity and minerality to the wines. With its continental climate tempered by Atlantic and Mediterranean influences, Rioja offers excellent conditions for both red and white grape varieties. White Rioja, once overshadowed by its red counterparts, has seen a true renaissance, with producers like Murua focusing on freshness, aromatic purity, and careful use of oak. The region’s long viticultural tradition dates back to Roman times, but it came into its own in the 19th century, notably influenced by French expertise and techniques.
As for food pairings, the Cuvée Murua Blanco is a versatile companion at the table. Its lively acidity and subtle structure pair beautifully with seafood, such as grilled prawns with garlic, pan-seared scallops, or salt cod (bacalao al pil pil), a local favourite. White meats like roast chicken with herbs, or dishes with a touch of cream or spice, such as chicken fricassee or mild Thai curries, are also well suited. For a traditional Rioja touch, pair it with gambas a la plancha or artichokes in olive oil.
For optimal enjoyment, serve this wine well-chilled, ideally between 8 and 10°C. Allow it to open in the glass to fully appreciate the interplay of fruit, floral and mineral notes. It can be enjoyed young for its freshness, but may also develop interesting complexity with an additional year or two in bottle.
