R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia 2012 is a classic Rioja, deeply rooted in tradition. This red comes from one of the most historic estates in the region, produced primarily from Tempranillo grapes, with smaller proportions of Garnacha, Graciano, and Mazuelo, composing the signature Viña Tondonia blend. The 2012 vintage benefited from a balanced growing season, offering both ripeness and freshness. This wine is aged for several years in large American oak barrels, followed by extensive bottle ageing before release, resulting in a complex structure and evolutionary character. On the palate, you can expect elegantly integrated tannins framing notes of red berries, dried cherry, leather, tobacco, and subtle spicy, earthy undertones. Its finish is long, with gentle acidity and remarkable finesse.
La Rioja, particularly around Haro where Viña Tondonia is located, is defined by its clay-limestone soils and relatively cool, Atlantic-influenced climate—ideal for slow, balanced grape maturation and expressive aromatics. The region boasts a rich pedigree, having been one of Spain’s first official Denominaciones de Origen (DO), dating back over a century. The area combines tradition and innovation, but López de Heredia remains steadfastly classical, crafting wines that speak eloquently of Rioja’s noble heritage and terroir.
This elegant, savoury Rioja pairs beautifully with a wide range of dishes. Its earthy, mature character makes it a wonderful match for traditional Spanish fare such as roast lamb with herbs, grilled Ibérico pork, or, for something simple, Jamón Ibérico and Manchego cheese. Mushroom risotto, game birds, or slow-cooked beef stews like Rioja-style olla podrida work equally well, the wine’s acidity cutting through the richness of the dishes.
For optimal enjoyment, decant the wine for at least an hour to allow the aromas to fully unfold. Serve it at around 16-18°C. This temperature allows the subtlety and depth of this fine Rioja to shine, making every glass a reflection of its storied birthplace.
