Mazuelo, also known internationally as Carignan, is a distinguished red grape variety renowned for contributing depth and structure to blended wines. Characterised by vivid aromas of black cherry, wild blackberry, and plum, Mazuelo often reveals subtle herbal notes, hints of liquorice, and a touch of spice. On the palate, it is typically robust and full-bodied, exhibiting pronounced tannins and lively acidity, which together impart excellent ageing potential.
Mazuelo thrives primarily in Spain, with notable plantings in the Rioja and Cariñena appellations, as well as in the regions of Priorat and Navarra. Outside Spain, it finds favourable conditions in southern France, especially in Languedoc-Roussillon.
Wines made from Mazuelo are usually crafted in bold, structured styles, either as varietal wines or, more commonly, as a component in blends, particularly with Tempranillo and Garnacha. These wines are ideal for cellaring, developing greater complexity over time.
Mazuelo pairs exceptionally well with richly flavoured dishes such as roast lamb, game meats, and hearty stews. Its vibrant acidity and firm tannins also complement matured cheeses and dishes featuring earthy or spicy sauces, making it a versatile choice for gastronomic pairings.
