Viniou Reviews

La Rioja Alta “The Society’s Exhibition Reserva” 2020 is an exemplary red wine, expertly capturing the essence of classic Rioja. Crafted predominantly from Tempranillo, possibly blended with small amounts of Graciano and Mazuelo, this cuvée is vinified with meticulous care. Grapes are sourced from well-situated vineyards in Rioja Alta, an area famed for its higher altitude and cooler climate. The 2020 vintage faced some viticultural challenges due to heat and early ripening, yet diligent work in the vineyard has led to a wine that balances ripe fruit with a refreshing backbone. The Reserva category requires a minimum of three years ageing, with at least one year in oak barrels – here, the influence of both American and French oak lends subtle notes of vanilla, spice, and a delicate smokiness, complementing the vibrant red cherry and plum fruit at the core.

La Rioja is one of Spain’s most distinguished wine regions, situated along the upper stretches of the Ebro River. The diverse soils—ranging from chalky clay to iron-rich red earth—and the sheltering Cantabrian mountains combine to create an ideal microclimate: warm days, cool nights, and a Mediterranean influence softened by Atlantic breezes. This unique terroir has shaped the character of Rioja wines for centuries, with the region’s history steeped in tradition and an enduring commitment to quality, particularly in the ageing of reds. Rioja Reserva wines such as this are renowned for both their immediate appeal and their capacity to evolve beautifully with time.

The structure and complexity of this Reserva make it a splendid pairing for a variety of dishes. Classic partners from the region include slow-cooked lamb (cordero asado), riojana-style potatoes with chorizo, and aged manchego cheese. Its supple tannins and vivid fruit also suit roast meats, grilled vegetables, and hearty stews. Mushroom-based risottos and dishes with piquillo peppers harmonise well with its earthiness and gentle spice.

For optimal enjoyment, serve this Rioja Reserva slightly below room temperature, ideally between 16 and 18°C. Decanting for thirty minutes before serving unlocks its nuanced bouquet and allows the flavours to meld gracefully.
