Marqués de Murrieta Reserva 2020 is a distinguished red wine from the heart of Rioja, Spain’s most celebrated wine region. Crafted primarily from Tempranillo, often complemented by small proportions of Graciano, Mazuelo and Garnacha, this cuvée reflects the classic structure and elegance for which the estate is renowned. The 2020 vintage benefitted from favourable growing conditions, resulting in concentrated fruit and a refined tannic backbone. The wine undergoes traditional ageing in American oak barrels for at least 18 months, which imparts gentle vanilla and spice notes, while preserving the freshness and purity of the fruit. On the nose, expect aromas of ripe red berries, cedar, leather, and a touch of balsamic. The palate reveals a harmonious balance between vibrant acidity, polished tannins, and a lingering finish accented by hints of tobacco and dried herbs.
La Rioja, nestled between the Cantabrian Mountains and the River Ebro, enjoys a unique climate influenced by both the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. This crossroads of weather systems, paired with diverse soils ranging from clay-limestone to sandy alluvial, makes Rioja exceptionally suited for complex, age-worthy reds. The region has a storied history, with Marqués de Murrieta being one of its founding modern bodegas, established in the mid-19th century and pivotal in introducing French winemaking techniques, including oak barrel ageing, to Spain. The resulting wines often combine Old World finesse with Spanish warmth and expressiveness.
Rioja Reserva pairs beautifully with roast lamb, grilled beef or ibérico pork, allowing the savoury, spiced nuances of the wine to shine. Local specialities such as lamb chops a la riojana or chorizo al vino are equally delightful matches. For cheese, opt for a mildly aged Manchego.
Serve this wine at 16-18°C to allow its aromatic complexity and textural richness to fully open up. Decanting for 30 to 60 minutes prior to serving is recommended, especially for a youthful vintage like 2020, to soften the tannins and enhance the wine’s approachability.
