Matarromera’s Ribera del Duero Reserva 2019 is a classic expression of one of Spain’s most prestigious wine regions. Typically crafted mainly or exclusively from Tempranillo, locally known as Tinta del País or Tinto Fino, this style of wine is celebrated for its structure, depth and remarkable ageing potential. The Reserva designation suggests ageing for a minimum of three years, with at least twelve months in oak barriques, though producers often exceed these minimums. Expect a wine that balances ripe black and red fruit notes, such as black cherry and plum, with nuanced layers of sweet spice, tobacco, cedar, and perhaps hints of cocoa or liquorice. The 2019 vintage in Ribera del Duero was generally warm and favourable, often producing wines with concentrated fruit, firm but polished tannins, and vibrant acidity, all of which bode well for cellaring or immediate enjoyment after suitable aeration.
Ribera del Duero stretches along the Duero River in northern Spain’s Castilla y León region. The area is defined by a continental climate with significant diurnal temperature variations: hot, dry summers and cold winters help ensure an optimal balance of ripeness and acidity in the grapes. The vineyards here, frequently set at higher altitudes (700–900 metres above sea level), benefit from well-drained, often stony soils interspersed with limestone and clay, contributing complexity and longevity to the finished wine. Ribera del Duero’s renaissance in the late 20th century propelled Spanish red winemaking onto the world stage, and estates like Matarromera have played a significant role in this rise.
This style of Reserva is exceptionally versatile at the table. Grilled or roasted lamb, a classic pairing from the region, draws out the wine’s earthy and savoury undertones. Rich dishes such as beef cheeks braised in red wine, game meats, or slow-cooked oxtail stew are excellent choices. For a truly local touch, consider serving with Castellano dishes like lechazo asado (roast suckling lamb) or morcilla de Burgos (spiced black pudding). Mature cheeses such as Manchego or Zamorano also make a fine accompaniment.
For optimal enjoyment, decant the wine for at least an hour to allow its bouquet to unfurl. Serve at 16-18°C in large, rounded glasses to best appreciate its complexity. This Reserva has the capacity to develop further in bottle, but is already showing beautifully if enjoyed thoughtfully.
