Vega Sicilia’s Valbuena 5° 2019 is an emblematic red wine from the celebrated Ribera del Duero DO in Spain. Crafted primarily from Tinto Fino (the regional name for Tempranillo), with small additions of Merlot and perhaps other red varieties—depending on vintage—the Valbuena 5° expresses all the prestige and meticulous winemaking that have made Vega Sicilia a reference among Spain’s great properties. The wine spends five years maturing, a combination of tank, French and American oak barrels, and bottle, which gives it remarkable complexity and polish. The 2019 vintage, shaped by a moderately warm but balanced year, boasts rich, concentrated dark fruits, refined tannins, and layered notes of spice and balsam, with a signature freshness that reflects the estate’s exceptional terroir.
The Ribera del Duero region sits on the northern plateau of Castile and León, with vineyards stretching on both banks of the Duero river at altitudes of 700-900 metres. The climate is continental, marked by hot summers and cold winters, with significant diurnal temperature variation—ideal for producing wines of backbone and freshness. Soils are a mosaic of limestone, marl, clay and pebbles, which contribute to the structured elegance and ageing potential that characterise iconic Ribera wines. Historically, the region gained international renown in the late 20th century, but Vega Sicilia’s wines, founded in the 19th century, have long set the standard for finesse and longevity.
Valbuena 5°’s depth and sophistication shine with equally refined dishes. Roast lamb, a classic pairing from Castilian cuisine, highlights the wine’s savoury notes and supple tannins. Pluma ibérica or matured beef steaks also complement its body, while richer mushroom dishes and truffled poultry create delicious harmony. For cheese, opt for aged Manchego or a mild blue.
For optimal enjoyment, decant the wine for at least an hour to allow it to open fully. Serve at 16-18°C, in large-bowled glasses to reveal its aromatic complexity. Valbuena 5° 2019 promises immediate pleasure, but will also reward cellaring over the coming decade.
