Matarromera Crianza 2020 is an excellent representative of the Ribera del Duero region, crafted predominantly from the Tempranillo grape, locally known as Tinta del País. This Crianza spends a minimum of one year ageing in oak barrels, followed by further refinement in the bottle, bringing balanced structure and complexity to the wine. The 2020 vintage, with its vibrant ruby colour, reveals enticing aromas of ripe blackberries, plums and subtle hints of spice and tobacco, complemented by well-integrated oak and a touch of vanilla. The palate is supple yet refined, supported by rounded tannins and a fresh acidity that gives length and balance.
Situated on Spain’s northern plateau, the Ribera del Duero enjoys a continental climate with hot summers and cold winters, which helps grapes achieve exceptional ripeness while preserving acidity. The region’s distinctive terroir—composed of alluvial soils with layers of clay, limestone and sand—contributes to the intensity and age-worthiness of its wines. Ribera del Duero has enjoyed a rapid rise in prestige since being granted DO status in 1982, blending centuries-old winemaking with innovative techniques. The mosaic of small plots, old vines and dramatic river-cut landscapes defines the expressive power and depth found in its red wines.
Matarromera Crianza’s structure and aromatic complexity make it ideal for a wide range of pairings. Traditional Castilian cuisine—such as roasted lamb (lechazo asado) or suckling pig (cochinillo)—showcases its affinity for hearty, flavourful dishes. The wine also complements grilled red meats, wild mushrooms, hard cheeses like Manchego, or rich lentil stews. If you prefer international cuisine, consider pairing with a classic beef Wellington or a mushroom risotto.
For optimal enjoyment, serve this wine at 16-18°C. Decanting for around 30 minutes will help the wine open up, allowing its bouquet and palate to fully express their depth. This Crianza is enjoyable now, but has the structure to evolve gracefully over several more years in your cellar.
