Vintry's Porto Ruby is a classic example of a ruby Port, distinguished by its deep red hue and lively character. As a non-vintage Port, it is made from a blend of several years, with a focus on freshness and fruit-forward flavours rather than the complexity of long-aged Ports. The principal grape varieties typically include Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz (also known as Tempranillo), Tinta Barroca, and Tinto Cão, all native to the Douro Valley. Vinification for Ruby Port involves relatively short maceration to extract colour and aroma, followed by fortification with grape spirit, which stops fermentation and preserves the natural sweetness. The wine is then aged in large tanks for a short period—usually two to three years—to retain its youthful vigour and intense fruitiness.
Port wine originates from the Douro Valley in northern Portugal, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The region is renowned for its dramatic steepled terraces and schist-laden soils, which force the vines to dig deep for water and nutrients, giving the grapes remarkable concentration. The combination of hot, dry summers and cold winters creates ideal conditions for ripening, while the region's long viticultural history ensures meticulous knowhow in both vineyard and cellar. The city of Porto, at the mouth of the Douro River, has been the historic hub of the international Port trade.
A Ruby Port such as this pairs beautifully with a variety of foods. Its sweet, robust berry notes make it an excellent match for blue cheeses like Stilton, aged hard cheeses such as mature Cheddar, or dark chocolate desserts. For a more traditional Portuguese pairing, try it with Queijo da Serra or pastéis de nata. The wine’s vibrancy can also complement roasted nuts or berry tarts.
To best enjoy Vintry's Porto Ruby, serve it slightly chilled, at 13-16°C. This temperature accentuates the freshness of the fruit while tempering the sweetness and alcohol, ensuring a harmonious tasting experience. Decanting is generally unnecessary for Ruby Port, as it is designed for immediate pleasure rather than extended cellaring.
