Poças Colheita 1996 is a remarkable expression of a tawny Port from one of Portugal’s most respected family-run houses. As a “Colheita”, this Port is crafted from a single vintage—here, the acclaimed 1996 harvest—and matured in oak casks for over two decades prior to bottling. The blend is based predominantly on native Douro grape varieties, including Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, and Touriga Franca, whose robust profiles have mellowed beautifully with extended ageing. During its long slumber in wood, the wine has developed a seductive complexity: expect aromas of dried fig, caramelised nuts, orange peel, and a gentle undertone of spice, carried on a silky, mahogany-hued palate. The finish is lingering, yet elegant, marked by notes of toffee and warm spice.
The Douro Valley, the region underpinning Porto DOC, is one of the world’s oldest demarcated wine regions and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sculpted by steep, schistous hillsides and the meandering Douro river, the landscape is dramatic and challenging for viticulture. Summers here are intensely hot and dry, while winters are cold, lending concentration to the grapes. The unique interplay of altitude, aspect, and schist soils gives Douro Ports their signature depth and aromatic complexity. Historically, Port was born out of necessity, with grape spirit added to preserve the wines for export to England—thus giving rise to the distinctive, fortified style still loved worldwide.
To savour a Colheita Port like this, let it play a starring role at the end of a meal. Its nutty and caramelised character partners beautifully with classic Portuguese desserts such as pasteis de nata or almond tart, though it also makes an inspired match with mature hard cheeses, blue cheese, or walnut-based cakes. For a more international touch, consider pairing it with a rich chocolate fondant or pecan pie, where the wine’s acidity restores balance to the sweetness of the dish.
Serve Poças Colheita 1996 slightly chilled, ideally between 12 and 14°C, in a reasonably sized port glass to capture its bouquet. Decant gently if any sediment is present. Once opened, this Colheita can be enjoyed for several weeks, making it a convivial companion for both quiet moments and festive gatherings.
