Viniou Reviews

DR Port "Cuvée 20 Years" is a red port hailing from the renowned Porto DOC in Portugal, produced by the distinguished DR Port house. Although the year 2021 refers to its bottling date, this wine is carefully blended from multiple vintages to achieve an average age of 20 years, resulting in a complex, nuanced profile. The blend typically includes local grape varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, and Tinto Cão, which are hallmarks of traditional port production in the Douro Valley. Vinification involves the fortification of the wine with grape spirit during fermentation, allowing residual sugar to remain, thus producing a luscious and balanced sweetness married to a fine structure. The long oak ageing brings out layered aromas of dried fruits, nuts, caramel, and hints of spice while maintaining vibrant acidity and superb depth.

Originating from the Douro Valley—the oldest demarcated wine region in the world—the Porto DOC benefits from a rugged landscape of steep, terraced vineyards cut into schist soils. The climate is continental, marked by hot, dry summers and cold winters, nurturing grapes of exceptional concentration and flavour intensity. The river Douro plays a fundamental role in moderating temperatures and providing crucial cooling at night. The history of port wine production in this region dates back centuries, embodying a unique marriage of tradition and innovation that continues to set the international benchmark for fortified wines.

A 20-year-old tawny port is highly versatile at the table, shining alongside a wide range of foods. Classic Portuguese pairings include Queijo da Serra, a creamy sheep’s cheese, or a selection of aged hard cheeses. It also performs outstandingly with desserts featuring dried or caramelised fruits, such as fig tart or tarte tatin, as well as walnuts, pecans, or roasted almonds. For a more adventurous match, try it with foie gras or game terrine, where its richness complements savoury depth.

For optimal enjoyment, serve this wine slightly chilled, between 12–14°C. Use a small port glass or white wine glass to appreciate its bouquet fully. Allow the wine to breathe for a few minutes after opening; it may be kept for several weeks if stored cool and sealed, as its oxidative ageing grants it natural stability.
