Verso Rosso 2021 from Salento IGT in the Puglia region of southern Italy is a red wine that captures the sun-drenched essence of its birthplace. Typically crafted from native grape varieties such as Primitivo, Negroamaro, and sometimes Malvasia Nera, this cuvée is celebrated for its ripe, plush fruit character and accessible style. The 2021 vintage benefited from a warm growing season, leading to full phenolic ripeness and generous concentration. In the glass, expect a deep ruby hue and aromas of black cherry, plum, and hints of dried fig, often complemented by touches of vanilla and sweet spice from brief ageing in oak. The palate is velvety and supple, with well-integrated tannins and a lingering note of chocolate and Mediterranean herbs.

Salento, located at the heel of Italy’s boot, boasts a rich winemaking history influenced by both Greek and Roman traditions. The region benefits from a distinctive Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and sea breezes from both the Adriatic and Ionian coasts. The soils are predominantly clay-limestone, which aids in drainage and helps to concentrate the grapes’ natural flavours. Historically, Salento was known for producing robust, powerful reds intended to bolster northern Italy’s lighter wines, but today it stands proudly on its own for crafting expressive, fruit-forward reds like Verso Rosso.

Verso Rosso 2021’s lush and generous profile makes it an ideal companion to hearty dishes. It pairs beautifully with grilled meats such as lamb or beef, and shines alongside rustic Italian fare like orecchiette pasta with sausage and tomato ragù, or a classic eggplant parmigiana. For a true taste of the region, try it with a rich Puglian lasagne or spicy salumi.
