Negroamaro is an indigenous black grape variety predominantly cultivated in the southern Italian region of Puglia, particularly in the Salento peninsula. Renowned for its deep colour and robust character, Negroamaro produces wines exuding an enticing aromatic profile of dark berries such as blackberry and black cherry, complemented by subtle notes of Mediterranean herbs, liquorice, and a characteristic hint of earthy spice. On the palate, these wines offer medium to full body, with firm yet supple tannins, a moderately high alcohol content, and a lingering, slightly bitter finish which gives the grape its name—‘negroamaro’ translating to ‘black and bitter’.
Negroamaro lends itself to both single-varietal expressions and blends, often with Malvasia Nera, creating structured and complex wines. The grape is showcased in various styles, including vibrant rosés (‘rosato’) and bold, age-worthy reds, such as Salice Salentino DOC.
Ideal food pairings include hearty Mediterranean cuisine: slow-cooked lamb, beef stews, game, and rich tomato-based pasta dishes. Its rosé expressions are particularly enjoyable with grilled seafood, savoury pastries, and aged cheeses, highlighting Negroamaro’s versatility at the table.
