Primitivo is a red grape variety renowned for producing deeply coloured, full-bodied wines with robust character. Originating from Apulia (Puglia) in southern Italy, especially within the provinces of Taranto and Brindisi, Primitivo has become synonymous with the region’s bold wine tradition. The grape is closely related to Zinfandel, sharing genetic origins yet expressing distinct regional nuances.
Aromatically, Primitivo wines display an intense bouquet of ripe blackberries, plums, and black cherries, often accented by notes of sweet spices, liquorice, and subtle hints of cocoa. On the palate, these wines are typically rich and concentrated, with velvety tannins, generous alcohol, and a fine balance between dark fruit intensity and refreshing acidity. Some expressions offer nuances of dried figs, vanilla, and black pepper, particularly when oak-aged.
Primitivo is crafted in diverse styles, from vibrant, youthful reds to robust, oak-matured Riserva bottlings, and even luscious, late-harvest or passito-style offerings. It pairs exceptionally well with hearty Italian fare such as grilled lamb, slow-cooked beef ragù, spicy sausages, and mature cheeses. Its bold structure also complements rich tomato-based dishes and barbecued meats, making it a versatile choice for flavourful, savoury cuisine.
