Giacomo Conterno's Barolo DOC "Cuvée Francia" 2004 is a truly exceptional example of traditional Nebbiolo from one of Piedmont's most revered producers. Sourced exclusively from the renowned Francia vineyard in Serralunga d’Alba, this vintage is a testament to careful vineyard management and a non-interventionist approach in the cellar. 2004 is widely celebrated as a classic year for Barolo, marked by moderate temperatures and a long growing season, giving rise to wines with remarkable purity, balance and ageing potential. Vinification adheres to the house’s signature style: extended maceration and ageing in large Slavonian oak botti, which favours the development of complex aromas and refined tannic structure without overshadowing the unique character of the Nebbiolo grape.
Barolo is undoubtedly the crown jewel of Piedmont, a region nestled at the foot of the Alps in northwest Italy. The area is defined by a continental climate, with marked diurnal temperature shifts and foggy autumns that are ideal for Nebbiolo’s slow and complex ripening. The soils around Serralunga d’Alba, composed mainly of clay and limestone, foster wines of structure, depth and serious longevity. Historically, Barolo has been lauded as the "wine of kings, king of wines," owing to its regal stature and its established place in Italy’s oenological heritage.
Pairing this noble Barolo calls for equally sophisticated cuisine. Its powerful tannins and layered aromas of rose, tar, truffle, and dark cherries stand up to hearty Piedmontese classics such as brasato al Barolo (beef braised in Barolo), tajarin with white truffle, or wild mushroom risotto. Game meats, aged Parmigiano-Reggiano, and roasted root vegetables also enhance the wine’s earthy complexity.
For optimal enjoyment, decant the wine for at least two hours to allow the bouquet to unfold fully. This Barolo should be served at 17-18°C, drawing out all the nuances this monumental 2004 vintage has to offer.
