Viniou Reviews

Produced by the legendary Giacomo Conterno, the Barolo DOC Cuvée Francia 2010 is a remarkable expression of the Nebbiolo grape, distinguished by its profound structure and age-worthiness. Harvested from the esteemed Francia vineyard in Serralunga d’Alba, this vintage benefited from ideal growing conditions in 2010, resulting in a wine of exceptional depth and elegance. The wine undergoes traditional vinification with extended maceration and ages for several years in large Slavonian oak casks, which imparts finesse while respecting the inherent power and aromatic complexity of Nebbiolo.

The Barolo region, nestled in the heart of Piedmont, is renowned for producing some of Italy’s most celebrated red wines. The area’s unique terroir is defined by calcareous clay soils and a continental climate, with hot summers, cold winters, and significant diurnal temperature variations. These elements contribute to the slow and optimal ripening of Nebbiolo, endowing the wines with firm tannins, vibrant acidity, and a distinctive bouquet reminiscent of roses, tar, truffle, and dried cherries. The region’s rich viticultural history dates back centuries, and Barolo is often referred to as the ‘King of Wines and Wine of Kings’, a testament to its esteemed status.

Pairing such a powerful and complex Barolo calls for dishes that match its intensity. Classic Piedmontese cuisine, such as brasato al Barolo (beef braised in Barolo), is a natural choice, as the wine's tannins and acidity cut through the richness of the meat. Truffle risotto, wild mushroom dishes, or aged cheeses like Castelmagno complement the earthy and savoury notes of the wine. For a more international approach, hearty lamb shanks or venison stews also make excellent pairings.

For optimal enjoyment, serve this Barolo at 17-18°C. Decant it for at least two hours to allow its intricate aromas to unfurl. Although showing beautifully now, the 2010 vintage can be cellared for another decade or more, rewarding patience with increased complexity and elegance.
