Podere Sapaio’s Volpolo 2020 is a distinguished red wine from the Bolgheri DOC in the heart of coastal Tuscany, Italy. This cuvée elegantly blends Bordeaux varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, a hallmark of Bolgheri’s modern winemaking style. The 2020 vintage was marked by a balanced growing season, delivering ripe, concentrated fruit while retaining freshness. After meticulous hand-harvesting, fermentation typically occurs in stainless steel to preserve the vibrant fruit characters, followed by ageing in French oak barriques that impart subtle spice, structure, and depth. The result is a wine with ample dark berry notes, hints of cassis and plum, layered with tobacco, cedar, and a touch of Mediterranean herbs. The profile is powerful yet refined, with polished tannins and a lingering, savoury finish.
The Bolgheri region enjoys a mild, maritime climate thanks to its proximity to the Tyrrhenian Sea. The cooling breezes moderate the summer heat, ensuring slow and even grape ripening, while the long, sunny days help develop depth of flavour and aromatic complexity in the grapes. The soils here are varied yet predominantly sandy-loam with pockets of clay and gravel, ensuring excellent drainage and mineral complexity in the wines. Historically, Bolgheri was thrust onto the global stage in the latter half of the 20th century when innovative producers began planting French varietals, inspired by the great wines of Bordeaux, and set new standards for Italian reds. Today, Bolgheri is synonymous with some of Italy’s most acclaimed and age-worthy wines.
Volpolo 2020 pairs beautifully with hearty Tuscan cuisine such as bistecca alla fiorentina (Florentine steak), wild boar ragù over pappardelle, or aged pecorino cheese. Its combination of structure and freshness also makes it an excellent companion to grilled lamb, roasted vegetables, and game birds, as well as dishes with truffles or porcini mushrooms that echo the wine’s earthy undertones.
For optimal enjoyment, decant the Volpolo 2020 for an hour before serving to allow the aromas to fully unfold. Serve at a temperature between 16-18°C to best express its nuanced bouquet and silky texture. With careful cellaring, this wine will continue to evolve gracefully over the next 8-10 years.
