Viniou Reviews

Mas de Daumas Gassac Rouge 2018 is an emblematic cuvée from the Languedoc, often heralded as the “Grand Cru of the South.” Produced from a unique blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine is complemented by a diverse array of lesser-known varieties such as Petit Manseng, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and a medley of Mediterranean grapes. The 2018 vintage benefited from a balanced growing season, with dry summer conditions yielding wines of concentration and finesse. The vineyard sits on ancient, well-drained, glacial limestone soils, imparting finesse and elegance atypical for the region. Fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts, and aging occurs in a combination of old and new oak barrels for up to 12-15 months, preserving the purity and aromatic complexity of the fruit, while allowing for subtle tertiary development.

The Languedoc region, stretching along France’s Mediterranean coast, enjoys a warm, sunny climate tempered by cooling breezes from the mountains and the sea. The Gassac valley, specifically, is sheltered by woodland and hills, creating a microclimate that preserves acidity and extends the ripening period — an ideal setting for Cabernet Sauvignon. The alluvial, gravelly soils found at Mas de Daumas have been likened to those of Bordeaux’s finest estates, albeit with a distinct southern character. Although Languedoc was historically known for bulk production, pioneers like Mas de Daumas have been instrumental in elevating the region to international recognition, focusing on quality and terroir expression since the 1970s.

With its concentrated dark fruit, herbal and floral notes, and elegant tannic structure, Mas de Daumas Gassac Rouge 2018 pairs beautifully with roasted lamb accented with rosemary, duck breast with figs, or a classic cassoulet. Regional cheeses such as Pélardon or aged Tomme are also excellent companions. For a more contemporary pairing, consider grilled venison with black olives, or Mediterranean vegetable tian.

For optimal enjoyment, decant the wine for at least an hour before serving to allow it to fully express its aromatic complexity. Serve at 16-18°C, which enables its nuanced bouquet and refined palate to shine. This vintage can be enjoyed now but promises further rewards with several years in the cellar.
