Petit Verdot is a distinguished red grape variety originally from Bordeaux, renowned for its contribution to classic Bordeaux blends. Its late ripening nature results in a deep, inky colour and a robust structure. On the nose and palate, Petit Verdot reveals an intense aromatic profile, characterised by pronounced notes of black fruits such as blackberry, plum and black cherry, often supported by violet, lilac and subtle herbal nuances. Ageing in oak can impart spicy undertones of vanilla, cedar and liquorice. The palate is typically full-bodied with firm tannins, fresh acidity, and a lingering finish, offering both power and finesse.
Petit Verdot thrives in warmer climates, notably in Bordeaux (especially the Médoc), as well as in regions of Spain, Australia, California, and South America, where producers increasingly bottle it as a single varietal wine.
Typically, Petit Verdot is used to add complexity, colour, and structure to blends but also produces expressive, age-worthy, single-varietal wines. Its intense flavour and robust tannins make it an excellent match for rich dishes such as roasted or grilled red meats, hearty stews, game, and mature hard cheeses. Spiced lamb or beef dishes are particularly well complemented by this grape’s depth and character.
