Viniou Reviews

Domaine Barraud's Saint-Véran "Cuvée Les Pommards" 2021 is a dry white wine crafted exclusively from Chardonnay, the emblematic grape of southern Burgundy. The 2021 vintage reflects the region's relatively cool conditions, which favour freshness and tension in the wine. The "Les Pommards" cuvée is sourced from particularly well-exposed, limestone-clay parcels, imparting both mineral purity and ripe fruit notes. Traditional vinification with a thoughtful use of oak allows for full aromatic development while preserving the typicity of the terroir. This results in a wine that balances orchard fruit and exotic citrus with subtle floral and hazelnut notes, underscored by an invigorating mineral backbone and a gently creamy texture.

The Saint-Véran appellation lies in the Mâconnais, at the southern tip of Burgundy, bordering Beaujolais. Here, the climate is slightly warmer than further north in the Côte d'Or, allowing Chardonnays to achieve generous ripeness while maintaining brisk acidity, especially in a year like 2021. The limestone-rich soils, often mixed with marl and clay, confer both structure and a vital, saline edge to the wines. Saint-Véran is a relatively young AOC, created in 1971, but the region boasts a long-standing vigneron tradition and produces whites renowned for their vivacity and finesse.

Pairing this wine is a real pleasure thanks to its brightness and gentle complexity. It shines alongside classic Burgundian dishes such as escargots de Bourgogne or a leek and goat’s cheese tart. Its creamy mineral streak also makes it a fine partner for pan-seared scallops, grilled sea bass, or roast chicken with tarragon. For regional flair, try it with bresse chicken in a light cream sauce or simply alongside local cheeses like Charolais.

For optimal tasting, chill the wine to between 10-12°C. This temperature enhances its citrus and floral aromatics while allowing the creamy texture and minerality to develop on the palate. Decanting for a short while before serving can further open up its complexities. Enjoy within the next three to five years to capture its youthful zest and sophistication.
