Chardonnay is one of the world’s most renowned and versatile grape varieties, celebrated for its ability to express a range of aromatic and flavour profiles depending on its origin and winemaking techniques. Classic aromas include green apple, citrus, and pear in cooler climates, often accompanied by subtle floral notes. In warmer regions, the grape develops richer stone fruit, melon, and sometimes tropical nuances. When oak-aged, Chardonnay frequently reveals layers of vanilla, toast, and butter, with a creamy mouthfeel.
The variety thrives in prestigious wine regions such as Burgundy (notably Chablis and Côte de Beaune), Champagne, California, and Australia’s Yarra Valley and Margaret River. Each region imparts distinct characteristics, from the minerality and taut freshness of Chablis to the rounder, fuller-bodied styles of the New World.
Chardonnay is crafted in diverse styles, from crisp, unoaked and mineral-driven to lush, barrel-matured and complex. Well-made examples show excellent balance and ageing potential.
Owing to its broad palate, Chardonnay pairs harmoniously with seafood (notably oysters and white fish), poultry in creamy sauces, risottos, and mild cheeses. Oak-aged styles complement roast chicken and richer, buttery dishes, enhancing the gastronomic experience.
