Croizet-Bages 2016, Pauillac AOC, is emblematic of the Left Bank’s revered heritage. This established estate, rooted in the Médoc since the 18th century, crafts its Cuvée Alias with a classic Bordeaux blend, typically dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot and touches of Cabernet Franc and sometimes Petit Verdot. The 2016 vintage is widely celebrated for its optimal ripeness and balance, having benefited from an excellent growing season. Expect a wine of dense colour and expressive aromas where blackcurrant, cedar, tobacco and hints of graphite reveal themselves. On the palate, the structure is firm yet refined, built upon ripe tannins and a precise freshness, promising graceful evolution over many years. The vinification is traditional, with fermentation in stainless steel followed by ageing in French oak barrels, imparting subtle notes of spice and integration.
Pauillac is one of the Médoc’s crowning jewels, situated north of Bordeaux along the Gironde estuary. The region’s gravelly soils are perfectly suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, enabling deep root systems and optimal drainage. The temperate, maritime climate tempers summer heat and provides enough rainfall for even ripening and complex flavour development. Pauillac’s historical association with some of the world's legendary châteaux establishes a tradition of powerful, long-lived wines, of which Croizet-Bages firmly takes part.
This robust red excels alongside richly flavoured dishes. Classic Bordeaux pairings such as roast lamb studded with garlic and rosemary, entrecôte bordelaise, or duck breast with a red wine reduction are natural choices. Regional specialities like magret de canard or confit de canard will play off the wine’s depth and tannic structure. For a cheese course, opt for well-aged Comté or Saint-Nectaire.
To fully appreciate the nuance and complexity of Croizet-Bages 2016, decant the bottle at least one hour before serving. The ideal tasting temperature is 16–18°C. This will ensure that the bouquet opens beautifully, the tannins soften, and the palate displays all the dimensions that make Pauillac one of Bordeaux’s most cherished appellations.
