Clairette-de-Die Tradition is a distinctive sparkling white wine from the northern Rhône Valley, produced under the Clairette-de-Die AOC. Crafted using the ancestral method, this non-vintage cuvée is essentially made with Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains, which imparts its vivid aromatic profile, complemented by a smaller proportion of Clairette bringing structure and acidity. The ancestral method (“méthode ancestrale dioise”) is an ancient technique in which the partial fermentation of the must is halted by cooling, trapping natural sweetness and bubbles to create a light, gently sparkling wine with lower alcohol and pronounced residual sugar. This gentle vinification preserves intensely floral and grapey aromas, alongside notes of white peach and acacia.
The foothills of the Diois region, nestled in the Drôme department within the Rhône Valley, offer a unique terroir. The area benefits from a continental climate moderated by altitude; cool nights retain freshness in the grapes, while sunny days promote full aromatic ripeness. The soils here are predominantly clay-limestone with some marl, providing good drainage and imparting a mineral undertone to the wines. Viticulture has thrived in the Clairette-de-Die region since Roman times, and the traditional sparkling style has been preserved largely in deference to the area’s singular climate and the suitability of the Muscat grape.
Clairette-de-Die Tradition makes a delightful partner for fruit-based desserts such as peach tart, apricot clafoutis, or lemon posset, as well as lighter pastries. The wine’s aromatic intensity and gentle sweetness suit it especially well to classic Rhône treats like bugnes (local beignets) or a blue cheese such as Fourme d’Ambert. For the adventurous, try it with spicy Asian dishes—the sweetness and effervescence offer wonderful balance to chilli and aromatic herbs.
For optimal tasting, serve well-chilled between 6-8°C. Use tall, slender flutes to maintain the fizz and relish the perfumed bouquet. Enjoy within two years of purchase for peak freshness and vibrance.
