Viniou Reviews

Galic's Cuvée Bijelo 9 from the Kutjevo appellation in Croatia's Slavonia region is a compelling example of a modern Croatian white blend. Crafted as a non-vintage cuvée, this wine represents a thoughtful blend of local and potentially international white grape varieties, though the exact composition remains a signature of the winemaker. Produced in the esteemed Galic Castle cellar, meticulous attention is paid to fermentation and maturation to preserve freshness, aromatic intensity, and balance, resulting in a dry (sec) white wine that captures the essence of its terroir.

The Kutjevo area lies within Slavonia in eastern Croatia, a region with a longstanding vinicultural tradition recognised since medieval times. The local landscape is characterised by gently rolling hills and fertile, mineral-rich soils, primarily loess and clay, particularly suited to viticulture. Slavonia benefits from a continental climate marked by cold winters and warm summers, allowing white grapes to ripen with excellent acidity and concentration. Kutjevo has historically produced some of Croatia's most esteemed white wines, often praised for their freshness, complexity, and age-worthiness.

Galic's Cuvée Bijelo 9 pairs beautifully with a range of foods thanks to its dry, crisp nature. Its versatility makes it a fantastic companion for lightly grilled freshwater fish such as trout, herbed chicken, or pork schnitzel. For a more local touch, consider serving it alongside Slavonian cuisine classics like kulen (a mildly spicy sausage) or sarma (stuffed cabbage rolls), as the wine's acidity will cut through the richness of these dishes and enhance their flavours. Soft cheeses or vegetable risottos also offer excellent pairing opportunities.

To enjoy its aromatic profile and lively palate, serve this wine chilled but not too cold, ideally around 8-10°C. Decanting is not necessary, but allow the wine a few moments in the glass to open up and reveal its subtle orchard and citrus aromatics. This versatile Slavonian white is best enjoyed young to capture its vibrant freshness.
