Sauvignon Blanc is a highly esteemed white grape variety renowned for its vibrant aromatic profile and refreshing acidity. Noted for its expressive nose, it typically displays intense aromas of gooseberry, green apple, grapefruit, elderflower and freshly cut grass, often accompanied by mineral undertones and, in some cases, subtle hints of capsicum or passion fruit.
This grape thrives in numerous cool and temperate wine regions worldwide, with benchmark expressions originating from France’s Loire Valley (notably Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé), New Zealand’s Marlborough region, as well as California’s Napa Valley and South Africa’s coastal areas.
Sauvignon Blanc produces a range of wine styles, from bone-dry, crisp and zesty unoaked versions to more textured examples occasionally matured in oak (as with Bordeaux Blanc). It is celebrated for its bright, lively acidity and pure fruit character, usually served young to preserve its distinctive freshness.
Due to its herbal nuances and brisk acidity, Sauvignon Blanc pairs excellently with seafood, goat’s cheese (especially Crottin de Chavignol), salads featuring fresh herbs, sushi, and light vegetarian fare. It also complements dishes with asparagus or citrus elements, making it a versatile choice for contemporary cuisine.
