Ànima Negra ÀN/2 2018 is a remarkable red blend originating from the enchanting Balearic Islands, more specifically, the island of Mallorca. Crafted mainly from indigenous grape varieties such as Callet, with the support of Mantonegro, Fogoneu, and a touch of Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine is a true reflection of its Mediterranean terroir. The 2018 vintage benefited from a mild, balanced growing season that allowed slow maturity and expressive aromatics. The grapes are farmed sustainably in calcareous soils rich in clay and pebbles, offering excellent drainage and flavour concentration. Winemaking at Ànima Negra privileges gentle extraction; fermentation occurs in stainless steel, before maturation in French and American oak barrels, lending the wine complexity, suppleness, and integrated spiciness.
The Balearic Islands, and in particular Mallorca, possess a unique viticultural heritage, drawing from centuries of winemaking dating back to Roman times. The region enjoys a typically Mediterranean climate – hot, dry summers and mild winters – tempered by coastal breezes that help maintain acidity and freshness in the grapes. Soils on the island are typically rich in limestone and clay, which, combined with old vines, result in wines with both depth and vivacity. Producers like Ànima Negra have been instrumental in reviving local grape varieties and enhancing the international reputation of Mallorcan wines.
With its medium to full body, ripe black and red fruit, hints of Mediterranean herbs, subtle liquorice, and a thread of minerality, ÀN/2 2018 is highly food-friendly. It pairs beautifully with grilled lamb cutlets drizzled in rosemary oil, slow-cooked pork shoulder, chorizo stews, or traditional Mallorcan dishes like ‘tumbet’ (roasted vegetables with tomato and potatoes) and ‘sobrasada’ (the island’s own cured sausage). The wine’s vibrant acidity also complements tapas such as Manchego cheese, marinated olives, and grilled vegetables.
Serve ÀN/2 at a cool cellar temperature—ideally around 15-17°C—to allow the expressive local fruit and gentle spices to shine without being masked by alcohol heat. Decant the bottle for around 30 minutes before drinking to fully open its bouquet and enjoy its layered complexity.
