Callet is an indigenous red grape variety primarily grown on the island of Mallorca, part of Spain’s Balearic Islands. Renowned for its delicate profile, Callet typically produces wines with a bright ruby hue, moderate alcohol, and refreshing acidity. Aromatically, it offers subtle notes of red berries such as cherry and wild strawberry, interwoven with hints of Mediterranean herbs, mild spices, and occasionally earthy or mineral tones stemming from the island’s limestone soils.
The grape finds its most notable expression in the regions of Pla i Llevant and Binissalem, where it is often blended with other local varieties such as Manto Negro or international grapes, yet increasingly showcased as a single varietal to emphasise its unique character. Callet-based wines range from youthful, fruit-driven styles matured in stainless steel, to more structured and complex examples aged in oak, displaying greater depth and finesse.
These versatile wines pair excellently with Mediterranean cuisine, including grilled fish, roasted vegetables, cured meats, and paella. Their moderate body and acidity also complement tapas selections, semi-hard cheeses, and lamb dishes. Callet’s understated elegance makes it an exceptional choice for both casual and refined dining experiences.
