Bodegas Mas Alta’s La Creu Alta 2012 is a robust red blend from the celebrated Priorat appellation in Catalonia, Spain. This cuvée typically showcases the distinctive character of the region through a carefully balanced combination of Grenache (Garnacha) and Carignan (Cariñena), often enhanced by small additions of Syrah or Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2012 vintage benefitted from warm and dry conditions, favouring optimal phenolic ripeness. Vinified with meticulous attention, these old-vine grapes experience extended maceration and ageing in French oak, resulting in a wine of remarkable concentration, depth and ageing potential. Glass in hand, expect an intense aromatic profile, redolent of black cherries, ripe plums, garrigue herbs, graphite and subtle spicy oak influences, culminating in a long, lingering finish underpinned by fine, velvety tannins.
Priorat’s unique viticulture is intimately tied to its steep slate (llicorella) soils and Mediterranean climate. The region is one of Spain’s few denominación de origen calificada (DOCa), a testament to its quality and history. Vineyards are often terraced along rugged hillsides, forcing roots to delve deep for nutrients and water, naturally limiting yields and enhancing complexity in the wines. Priorat has witnessed a renaissance since the 1990s, with estates like Mas Alta spearheading a focus on old vines, low yields and authentic expression of terroir. The mix of hot days, cool nights and the reflective slate encourages vivid ripeness while preserving freshness, producing wines of great power and finesse.
La Creu Alta’s depth and structure call for bold culinary companions. Rich, slow-cooked dishes such as Catalan lamb with rosemary and olives, Iberian pork cheeks braised in red wine, or hearty mushroom stews will echo the wine’s savoury depth and balance its tannins. Regional cheeses like manchego or aged Garrotxa are also inspired partners, as are aromatic, herb-infused vegetables and grilled game.
To fully appreciate its complexity, decant the wine for at least an hour and serve at 16-18°C. In its maturity, La Creu Alta 2012 rewards with both opulence and evolving tertiary notes—a true reflection of Priorat’s noble terroir.
