Dominio de Pingus 2020 from Ribera del Duero is one of Spain’s most iconic red wines. Crafted predominantly from the old-vine Tempranillo grape, locally known as Tinto Fino, this vintage benefits from exceptionally low yields and meticulous vineyard management, resulting in a wine of tremendous depth and character. The 2020 vintage experienced a balanced growing season with favourable weather conditions, contributing to both purity of fruit and polished tannins. The vinification process at Dominio de Pingus is traditional and minimalist, relying on indigenous yeasts, gentle extraction methods, and aging in French oak barrels, often with a significant portion being new oak. This approach lends the wine remarkable complexity, blending ripe black fruit aromas with pronounced notes of liquorice, violets, mineral undertones, and a touch of sweet spice from the wood.
The Ribera del Duero region, situated on Spain’s northern plateau along the Duero River, is renowned for its extreme continental climate with hot summers and cold winters, contributing to slow, balanced grape maturation. The region benefits from well-drained soils, a mix of limestone, clay, and gravel, which imparts both structure and freshness to the wines. Rich in viticultural history, Ribera del Duero has swiftly risen to international prominence, particularly for the power and longevity of its Tempranillo-based wines.
In terms of food pairings, Dominio de Pingus 2020 excels alongside hearty dishes that mirror its intensity and structure. Traditional Castilian roast lamb or suckling pig, slow-cooked dishes such as oxtail stew, or matured Manchego cheese would complement the wine’s powerful tannins and savoury depth. Its elegance also makes it an excellent companion for beef Wellington, wild mushroom risotto, or grilled venison.
For optimal enjoyment, decanting the wine for at least two hours is recommended to allow its full aromatic complexity to emerge. Serve slightly below room temperature, ideally between 16 and 18°C, to highlight its vibrant fruit, nuanced minerality, and harmonious oak integration. This bottle promises a rewarding experience both now and with extended cellaring.
