Viniou Reviews

Arzuaga Crianza 2018 from Ribera del Duero, Castilla y León, stands as an excellent example of a classic Spanish red. This wine is crafted predominantly from Tempranillo (locally known as Tinto Fino) with minor additions of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, which bring structure and complexity. The 2018 vintage benefited from a warm, dry growing season in the region, resulting in mature flavors and silky tannins. Staying true to the Crianza designation, the wine has spent a minimum of 12 months in oak barrels, usually American and French, ensuring subtle vanilla and toasted notes harmonizing with the ripe black fruit and hints of spice.

Ribera del Duero is one of Spain’s most renowned appellations, situated along the northern plateau of Castilla y León. The climate here is continental: hot, dry summers and cold winters, coupled with significant diurnal temperature shifts. This allows grapes to ripen fully while retaining fresh acidity, crucial for balance and aging potential. The terroir is defined by its high-altitude vineyards (often over 800 meters above sea level) and a diversity of soils, ranging from alluvial to limestone-rich clay, contributing further to the elegance and depth of the wines. Ribera del Duero’s wine tradition dates back to Roman times, but it is the 20th century, particularly the last few decades, that has seen a dramatic rise in the global reputation of its powerful yet refined reds.

For food pairing, Arzuaga Crianza 2018 is ideally suited to hearty, flavorsome dishes. Classic Castilian fare such as roast lamb (lechazo), grilled chorizo, or suckling pig are outstanding matches, enhancing the savory and earthy notes of the wine. It also complements aged hard cheeses, mushrooms, and dishes with roasted peppers or rich tomato sauces.

To enjoy this wine at its best, decant it for at least half an hour to soften the tannins and open up its bouquet. Serve between 16-18°C to allow the fruit, spice, and oak characteristics to fully develop on the palate.
