Viniou Reviews

Tomas Postigo 3 Año is a non-vintage red wine from the renowned Ribera del Duero DO in Spain’s Castille and León region. This wine is typically a blend dominated by Tinto Fino (the local name for Tempranillo), often complemented by small portions of other indigenous or international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot or Malbec. The “3 Año” designation hints at a careful ageing regime, with the wine maturing for around three years, some of which time is spent in oak barrels. This results in a wine of deep garnet colour, exhibiting intense aromas of ripe black fruit, dark cherry, liquorice and spice, supported by subtle notes of toasted wood, cocoa and balsamic nuances. On the palate, expect a harmonious structure, rounded tannins, and a lingering, elegant finish—a testament to both careful viticulture and masterful vinification.

The Ribera del Duero region unfolds along the upper reaches of the River Duero. It is characterised by a continental climate with considerable temperature swings between hot summer days and cool nights, which slow the ripening process and impart freshness and nuance to the grapes. Soils here are a complex mosaic of limestone, clay, sand and pebbles, which provide excellent drainage and contribute mineral notes and finesse to the wines. The area boasts a rich winemaking heritage, which in recent decades has earned it an international reputation for producing some of Spain’s most profound and age-worthy reds.

For food pairings, Tomas Postigo 3 Año shines alongside grilled or roasted meats, such as rack of lamb, beef ribeye, or slow-cooked pork shoulder. Traditional Spanish dishes like roasted suckling pig (cochinillo asado) or lamb cutlets a la castellana complement the wine superbly, as do hearty stews and aged Manchego cheese.

For optimal enjoyment, decant the wine an hour before serving to open up its aromas and flavours. Serve it at a temperature between 16°C and 18°C, which will showcase its rich fruit, elegant oak integration and velvety tannins to their full effect.
