Viniou Reviews

Meerlust Rubicon 2022 is a distinguished red blend originating from the renowned Meerlust Estate in Stellenbosch, one of South Africa’s most prestigious wine regions. The Rubicon is crafted predominantly from Cabernet Sauvignon, with added Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and a touch of Petit Verdot, echoing the classic Bordeaux style. The 2022 vintage exhibits both the estate’s commitment to tradition and its ability to express unique South African terroir. Hand-harvested grapes are meticulously sorted and vinified using a combination of open tank fermentation and subsequent aging in French oak barrels for enhanced complexity and structure. The wine delivers an intense nose of blackcurrant, plum, cedar, and subtle tobacco, rounded out by refined tannins and a lingering finish.

Stellenbosch, set within the Coastal Region of the Western Cape, is defined by its varied topography and ancient soils, predominantly decomposed granite with pockets of clay and sandstone. These well-drained soils, combined with a beneficial Mediterranean climate featuring warm, dry summers and cool, sea-influenced breezes, provide ideal conditions for growing noble Bordeaux varieties. The long history of viticulture here, stretching back to the 17th century, has helped Stellenbosch build a reputation as the cradle of fine red wines in South Africa, with estates like Meerlust consistently setting the benchmark.

With its rich, layered profile, Meerlust Rubicon 2022 is a superb companion for classic meat dishes. Consider pairing it with roast lamb adorned with rosemary and garlic, a hearty beef short rib, or venison cooked with juniper and wild herbs. For a regional touch, try it with Cape Malay bobotie or a slow-cooked oxtail potjie. The wine’s structure and depth also make it a beautiful match for mature hard cheeses or wild mushroom risotto.

For optimal enjoyment, decant the Rubicon for at least an hour to allow its bouquet to open up fully. Serve this wine slightly below room temperature, ideally between 16 and 18°C, to best showcase its elegance and complexity. The 2022 vintage is approachable now but will continue to evolve beautifully over the next decade if cellared under proper conditions.
