Château Musar 2016 is a red wine that epitomises the unique character of Lebanese winemaking. Crafted predominantly from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault and Carignan, this vintage showcases the harmonious blend typical of the estate. The 2016 vintage benefited from favourable weather conditions, with a relatively cool and long ripening period. Grapes were hand-harvested from old vines rooted in the stony soils of the Bekaa Valley, with strict selection ensuring only the finest fruit was chosen. Fermentation took place in cement vats, following the traditional methods of the domaine. Ageing was carried out in French oak barrels for about a year before blending and further bottle ageing in the cellars, resulting in a wine of complexity and longevity.
The Bekaa Valley is at the heart of Lebanese viticulture, distinguished by its high altitude—between 1,000 and 1,200 metres above sea level. This elevation provides a significant diurnal temperature variation, allowing the grapes to maintain both freshness and aromatic intensity. Soils are primarily gravelly and well-drained over limestone, contributing to the wine’s minerality and structure. The region boasts a rich vinous heritage stretching back to antiquity, with a winemaking tradition that endures despite challenging political and climatic circumstances. This fascinating terroir imparts a distinct Mediterranean flair, marrying ripe, sun-drenched fruit with elegance and depth.
Château Musar 2016, with its alluring bouquet of dried cherries, plums, leather, and exotic spices, is an excellent companion for slow-cooked lamb, beef tagine, or grilled aubergines topped with za’atar. Its aromatic complexity also pairs beautifully with Lebanese cuisine such as kibbeh or moussaka, allowing the wine’s earthy undertones to complement the aromatic herbs and spices of the region.
For optimal enjoyment, serve this wine at 16-18°C. Decanting for at least an hour before serving is recommended to reveal its intricate layers and soften any youthful tannins. This is a wine with superb cellaring potential, yet it can be fully appreciated in its early expressive years with thoughtful preparation.
