Foradori’s Granato 2019, crafted in the picturesque Vigneti delle Dolomiti DOC in Veneto, is an exceptional red wine that celebrates the indigenous Teroldego grape. This cuvée stands as a testament to both meticulous biodynamic viticulture and the expressive potential of its variety and terroir. The grapes are cultivated from old pergola-trained vines, rooted in alluvial porphyritic soils at the foothills of the Dolomiti mountains, and the wine undergoes a gentle vinification in open wooden vats, followed by ageing in large oak casks. The result is a deep, inviting ruby-hued wine with a vibrant core of ripe black cherry and plum, complex undertones of pomegranate, wild herbs, and subtle mineral notes, all supported by refined tannins and a brilliantly fresh acidity.
Vigneti delle Dolomiti is a cross-regional IGT covering areas of Trentino, Alto Adige, and parts of the Veneto, nested at the heart of northern Italy. The region is characterised by its alpine climate, which brings significant diurnal temperature shifts, retaining the natural acidity and aromatic purity of its grapes. The unique soils, composed largely of gravel, sand, and mineral-rich porphyry, lend the wines a pronounced minerality and elegance. Historically, this area has been a meeting point of Italian and Austro-Hungarian viticultural influences, resulting in a fascinating diversity of grapes and styles, though Foradori’s focus on Teroldego has helped redefine the variety as a flagship for the region.
Granato’s structure and aromatic intensity call for dishes with depth and earthy richness. Traditional Trentino specialities such as spezzatino di cervo (venison stew with juniper and polenta) or porcini risotto would showcase the wine’s fruit and spice while echoing its forest-floor nuances. It pairs beautifully as well with roasted lamb, aged mountain cheeses like Monte Veronese or Asiago, and even slow-cooked bean stews with herbs. Mediterranean cuisine—think aubergine parmigiana or roast duck with cherries—will also underline the wine’s vibrancy.
For the best tasting experience, decant Granato for at least one hour to reveal its multi-layered bouquet and unfold the texture. Serve at a cool but not chilled temperature, ideally between 16-18°C, to allow the complexity and aromatic subtlety to shine through. This 2019 vintage, while already delightful, will reward further cellar ageing for several years, developing even greater harmony and nuance.
