Viniou Reviews

Villa Annaberta’s 2022 Valpolicella Ripasso DOC beautifully encapsulates the essence of the Ripasso style. Crafted predominantly from Corvina, Rondinella, and Molinara grapes, the wine undergoes a traditional “ripasso” process, where freshly vinified Valpolicella is passed over the dried grape skins left after Amarone production. This unique vinification technique imparts greater depth, richness, and complexity to the wine, setting it apart from standard Valpolicella. The 2022 vintage, marked by favourable weather, offers vibrant fruit intensity, with aromas of black cherry, plum, and subtle notes of spice and dried herbs. On the palate, it balances freshness with velvety tannins and a persistent, elegant finish.

The Valpolicella region, nestled in the Veneto hills just north of Verona, has long been celebrated for its unique wines. The area benefits from a temperate climate: warm summers and mild autumns encourage optimal ripening, while cold breezes from the Alps help preserve freshness. The soils, comprising limestone, clay, and gravel, impart aromatic elegance and fine structure. Valpolicella’s winemaking history dates back to Roman times, and “ripasso” in particular has grown in stature, being prized for its accessible take on Amarone’s intensity.

Pairing suggestions for this Valpolicella Ripasso revolve around hearty yet refined cuisine. Classic Venetian dishes such as horsemeat stew (pastissada de caval) or risotto all’Amarone beautifully echo the wine’s savoury warmth. Elsewhere, the wine matches well with roasted lamb, duck breast, or a wild mushroom risotto. A cheese board of semi-hard selections, like Asiago or mature Taleggio, will also enhance its layered character.

For optimal enjoyment, serve Villa Annaberta’s Valpolicella Ripasso at 16-18°C, allowing its bouquet to express fully. Decanting for half an hour prior to serving will help soften the tannins and unlock its aromatic complexity. This wine is enjoyable now, yet will develop further nuance with a few years of cellaring.
