Barrua 2018 from Cantina Santadi is an expressive Sardinian red, crafted predominantly from Carignano (Carignan), complemented by a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The 2018 vintage benefits from an especially balanced season, delivering both excellent ripeness and elegant structure. The grapes are sourced from the rugged south-western corner of Sardinia, an area known for its warm Mediterranean breezes and mineral-rich, sandy-clay soils. Vinification follows a meticulous process: after careful selection, fermentation occurs under temperature-controlled conditions, followed by maturation in French oak barriques for approximately 18 months. This careful élevage gives Barrua its complex aromas of dark berry, plum, liquorice, Mediterranean herbs and subtle spice, with polished tannins and a persistent, velvety finish.
Sardinia's viticultural heritage is one of the oldest in Italy, enriched by centuries of influences from Phoenician, Roman, and Spanish traditions. The island’s south-west benefits from abundant sunshine, low rainfall, and strong saline winds from the sea, which encourage slow, healthy grape ripening and impart a distinctive mineral freshness to the wines. The soils, composed largely of sand, clay, and gravel, lend Barrua both vibrancy and depth. Sardinia's isolation has also preserved rare indigenous varieties like Carignano, which thrives here thanks to phylloxera-resistant sandy soils and the region's unique microclimate.
For food pairings, Barrua’s depth and elegance make it a brilliant companion to robust meat dishes such as braised lamb or wild boar stew, reflecting regional specialities like "porceddu" (roast suckling pig) or "malloreddus" pasta with sausage ragù. Aged cheeses such as Pecorino Sardo also complement the wine’s richness and savoury character.
To fully appreciate Barrua 2018, decanting for at least one hour is recommended. Serve at 16-18°C to allow its expressive bouquet and velvety palate to shine. Whether enjoyed now or cellared for further complexity, this is a wine that delivers a true taste of Sardinian character and craft.
