The Valle Rocanti Ghemme DOC “Cuvée Ghemme Leblanque” 2016 is a classic expression of northern Piedmont’s red wines. Based primarily on the Nebbiolo grape, known locally as Spanna, this cuvée may also include smaller proportions of local varieties such as Vespolina or Uva Rara, adhering to the Ghemme DOC regulations. The 2016 vintage proved beneficial for Piedmont, offering a long, balanced growing season that allowed the Nebbiolo to fully express itself, developing the grape’s hallmark aromatic complexity and firm structure. After careful hand-harvesting, the wine is traditionally vinified with an extended maceration on the skins and matured in large Slavonian oak casks, imparting delicate spice notes and allowing slow evolution.
Ghemme is situated in northern Piedmont, along the Sesia River, on the edge of the Alps. The region benefits from a continental climate with significant diurnal temperature shifts, fostering elegant acidity and aromatic finesse. The alluvial and morainic soils, rich in clay and mineral content, contribute to the structure and longevity of the wines. Although overshadowed historically by Barolo and Barbaresco, Ghemme’s vinegrowing tradition dates back to Roman times and delivers Nebbiolos of remarkable personality—fresher, often more ethereal, yet equally ageworthy.
A Ghemme such as this partners beautifully with the region’s cuisine: game birds, braised beef (bollito misto), risotto al Barolo, or local cheeses like Castelmagno and Toma. It equally shines with wild mushroom dishes, truffle-infused pasta, or simply with a roast lamb. The wine’s acidity and delicate tannic frame cut through rich sauces and fatty meats, while its perfumed bouquet enhances earthy, autumnal flavours—a classic pairing with Piedmontese agnolotti del plin.
To best appreciate the complexity of Valle Rocanti Ghemme Leblanque 2016, decant the wine at least an hour before serving. Ideal tasting temperature is 16-18°C. This allows the intricate aromas of red cherry, violet, dried herbs, and subtle spice to fully emerge, while the structure remains poised and supple on the palate.
